After graduating Essay After graduating from Ashford University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Child Development; , I am hoping to obtain a job working in the Public school system alongside the Pre-k teachers in implementing programs for Pre-k or become an owner of a childcare center. The nature of families and children in relation to society is important for my profession because in order to help improve the childcare center. I also hope to develop programs for Pre-k that children and their families will benefit from. I first need to know how the child’s family has a big impact on the child’s life and their ability to function in society. Not knowing anything about the child’s background, I feel like I won’t be able to do my job as best to my ability and give the child the appropriate guidance that they need to be successful. Every child is different and part of that comes from their family and home environment. This is what makes them unique and they bring that uniqueness to the classroom. Before we can try to understand the child we first need to understand the child as a whole, their background and family life. The knowledge that I have of the theories of socialization will impact my work in my future profession. This is because of the fact I will know what works and what’s best for the child and what doesn’t work. From experience I know that every child is different so what may work for one child won’t necessarily work for another child. Child’s have different temperament some kids are outgoing and outspoken while others are quiet and shy. The ones that are quiet and shy; I’ve learned you have to work harder at providing opportunities for them to work with other children. . By knowing the theories of socialization, I know what the family’s role is in socializing. The child and I know what my role as a teacher is in socializing the child. I also know what signs to look out for such as bullying and when a child is  having trouble. I also know that a child’s culture background has a lot to do with their socialization and I need to keep that i n mind. A lot of cultures do things differently, for instance, I may mistake a child’s not looking me in the eye as a sign of disrespect, but in some countries it is disrespectful for a child to look someone with authority in the eyes. Before I assume something about a child, I first need to get to know the child and learn about their culture. My understanding of child development will help assist me in my chosen profession because I will be able to help the parents and children that I will be working with. By being knowledgeable in child development I will be able to answer any questions that may arise from the parents. It will help me to do my job correctly and be able to bring out the best in the children I work with. It also gives me a chance to share my knowledge of child development with others. By knowing that each child goes through each stage of development at different times and knowing when a child may not be learning at the rate they are supposed to be, I may be able to catch a child that may have a learning disability because I know what signs to look for and when to notify the parents of any concerns. Also, by knowing what stage of development a child is in and what age, I will be able to implement the correct programs and activities for them that will challenge them. Why Are The Chicago Bulls So Good? Two weeks ago, I was home watching a Chicago Bulls game. I started to analyze why the team had the best record in the league. About nine years ago, the Chicago Bulls selected Michael Jordan in the third pick of the college draft from North Carolina. A few years later, the Bulls drafted Scottie Pippen from Central Arkansas State and just recently acquired Dennis Rodman from the San Antonio Spurs. After my diagnosis, I concluded that the Bulls have the three key elements to win the championship in 1996. The Bulls have Scottie Pippen the floor general, Michael Jordan the leader, and Dennis Rodman the rebounder. The Bull's floor general is Scottie Pippen, a player who has control over everything that happens on the floor. Scottie Pippen is one of the most versatile and talented player in basketball. He can pass like a guard, rebound like a power forward, score like a shooting guard, and run and jump like few others. The floor general is very important to the team because when the team is down by two the floor general will always make the basket to pull the team ahead. He also keeps the team focused and helps bring the younger players around. The leader is Michael Jordan, a player who everyone knows. Michael Jordan is the most recognizable athlete in the world. He is not only the top player of his era but is quite possible the best player ever to wear the uniform of an NBA team. What amazes me about Michael is he was not good in college. He worked harder then any other player to become great, and his career stats prove that fact. Michael walks on the court and leads by example. Ninety percent of the time, Jordan will prevail. Without a leader, the team would not endure the playoffs. The rebounder is Dennis Rodman, a player who takes his job seriously. He is a very popular player around the league. Employee Handbook Privacy Section Essay

According to Connelly, Roberts, and McGivney, LLC (1998), â€Å"in today’s workplace computers and electronic communications are the norm rather than the exception† (p. 1). With technology, rapidly advancing electronic communication is becoming essential. This creates a challenge for organizations on how and what to monitor when it comes to its employees. This paper will address the issue of privacy in the global workplace and give suggestions on what privacy rights issues should be addressed, as well as what the company’s position should be in response to its privacy rights. Lastly, it will define how organizations privacy protections may limit the company’s liability and how privacy protections enhance employee motivation and productivity. Privacy Rights to be Addressed The majority of employees expect to have a certain amount of privacy in the workplace. Nevertheless, there are times where the employer may have a justifiable reason to monitor or investigate the employee’s within its organization. The following provides some business practices that may be imposed to assure the honesty of the organization and the employees within the organization. One privacy right that should be addressed is drug testing. Drug testing helps to ensure the safety of the workplace. According to Jankanish and Husbands (1993), â€Å"drug and alcohol testing programs should fit within existing arrangements for ensuring the quality of work life, employee rights, the safety, and security of the worksite, and employer rights and responsibilities (e.g. protection of the public interest)† (p. 105). The testing should ensure the worker’s rights and confidentiality of the results. Another issue to be addressed is background checks on potential new hires. The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) has set guidelines and standards for organizations to follow when implementing a background check. According to Alison Doyle (nd), â€Å"the FCRA defines a background check as a consumer report. Before an employer can get a consumer report for employment purposes, they must notify you in writing and get your written authorization† (p. 1). Even if an employer is just running a basic check for inquiry purposes they must still get permission from the employee. The purpose of the background check is to ensure that information that was provided from the applicant is truthful, and some organizations require certain security clearances, or the individual may be applying for a position that works closely with children. The employer still needs to have permission from the applicant in ord er to run these background checks. Lastly, the employer needs to protect the privacy of employee personal information. According to Brian Koerner (nd), â€Å"twenty five percent of all identity thieves are known by the victim – whether it be a friend, relative, or co-worker† (p. 1). Employers need to take steps to keep personal information such as social security numbers, home addresses, and phone numbers safe. This information if obtained by the wrong person could lead to identity theft. Employers need to ensure that the appropriate steps are taken to keep employee information confidential. This can be done by utilizing an employee number rather than the employee’s social security number, make sure that personal information is not posted where it is easily accessible, only allowing acceptable personnel to handle confidential information, and dispose of information and documentation appropriately (about.com). Limiting Liability It is important that companies understand the different potential corporate and personal liability when preparing, planning, implementing or maintaining a n employee privacy handbook section. Companies must remain aware of potential issues that may need to be addressed in order to remain proactive and avoid liability pitfalls. There are many areas of potential liability an organization that includes negligence, liability under the privacy act, loss, or misuse of personal records, and criminal liability. In order to provide an organization with the most liability protection, they must be aware of what these liabilities are. Negligence is the failure to provide reasonable care, which result in damages to another person or company. If a company or organization does not take reasonable care to provide adequate protection for their employees or customers’ information and the employee or customer suffers damages, the organization may be legally responsible for the amount of loss suffered. In order to avoid negligence, organizations must be proactive and provide adequate security. The Privacy Act was created to ensure that companies are obligated to provide protection in ways that they retain, collect, use, and disclose personal information (Bushkin, p. 1). Companies covered by the Privacy Act are required to protect private and personal information they hold. Companies must avoid misuse and loss as well as unauthorized access. Whether it is physical protection or electronic protection, companies must provide a reasonable level of security. Companies who act negligent and cause excessive damages to individuals or customers may face criminal liability. Companies must act appropriately when dealing with private or personal information. Intentional misuse of personal or private information may result in criminal proceedings. Companies must take reasonable measure to ensure that the security systems in place adequately protect their employees and customer’s information. It is unlikely that an organization will be held responsible for information lost due to security attacks provided that they have acted reasonably in their attempts to protect the information (Givens, p. 1). Companies can face significant damages and a direct loss in business as well as liability to third parties if they do not proved the necessary security measures. By designing, developing and implementing a strong security policy as well as educating employees on how to handle private and personal information, companies can protect themselves and t heir employees from potential liabilities. It may be necessary for companies to audit their employees to ensure that information is not being misused. Addressing the laws required in the employee handbook regarding privacy will consist of the Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA). A PIA is an analysis of how information is handled: (1) to ensure handling conforms to applicable legal, regulatory, in addition, policy requirements regarding privacy, (2) to determine the risks and effects of collecting, maintaining, and disseminating information in identifiable form in an electronic information system, and (3) to examine and evaluate protections and alternative processes for handling information to mitigate potential privacy risks (September 26, 2003). When addressing the laws regarding privacy in the employee handbook the following processes will occur. Whenever any agency makes a determination under this section not to amend an individual’s record in accordance with his or her request, or fails to make such review in conformity; or fails to maintain any record concerning any individual with such accuracy, relevance, timeliness, and completeness as is necessary to assure fairness in any determination relating to the qualifications, character, rights, or opportunities of or benefits to the individual that may be made on the basis of such record, and consequently a determination is made which is adverse to the individual; or fails to comply with any other provision of this section, or any rule promulgated there under, in such a way as to have an adverse effect on an individual, the individual may bring a civil action against the agency, and the district courts of the United States shall have jurisdiction in the matters under the provisions of this section (September 26, 2003). The court may order the agency to amend the individual’s record in accordance with his request or in such other way as the court may direct. In such a case the court shall determine the matter de novo. The court may assess against the United States reasonable attorney fees and other litigation costs reasonably incurred in any case under this paragraph in which the complainant has substantially prevailed (September 26, 2003). The court may enjoin the agency from withholding the records and order the production to the complainant of any agency records improperly withheld from him (September 26, 2003.) In such a case the court shall determine the matter de novo, and may examine the contents of any agency records in camera to determine whether the records or any portion thereof may be withheld under any of the exemptions set forth in this section and the burden are on the agency to sustain its action (September 26, 2003). The court may assess against the United States reasonable a ttorney fees and other litigation costs reasonably incurred in any case under this paragraph in which the complainant has substantially prevailed (September 26, 2003). In any suit brought under the provisions of this section in which the court determines that the agency acted in a manner, which was intentional or willful, the United States shall be liable to the individual in an amount equal to the sum of actual damages sustained by the individual as a result of the refusal or failure, but in no case shall a person entitled to recovery receive less than the sum of $1,000; and the costs of the action together with reasonable attorney fees as determined by the court (September 26, 2003). An individual’s name and address may not be sold or rented by an agency unless such action is specifically authorized by law (September 26, 203). This provision shall not be construed to require the withholding of names and addresses otherwise permitted to be made public. Matching agreements, no record, which is contained in a system of records, may be disclosed to a recipient agency or non-Federal agency for use in a computer-matching program except pursuant to a written agreement between the sources agency and the recipient agency or non-Federal agency specifying (September 26, 2003). Having this section in the privacy handbook takes some ethical considerations because providing key rules and regulations in protecting someone’s personal information is extremely important. Due to the amount of technology in this day of age moreover, the amount of identity theft it is crucial to protect personal information. Having trust and security is an ethical consideration for the fact that someone will feel protected by the laws and the company. Corporations are faced with challenges everyday on how to protect their employees. By implementing and using the employee handbook privacy, section this will help to keep these companies records safe and secure for the employees. Technology has made it too easy for hackers to access information so by regulating how the information is kept will help to ensure the safety of the employee’s information. Critical Thinking Paul and Elder

Without reading the assigned chapter, and just looking at the stages of development of critical thinking, I immediately labeled myself as a practicing thinker. However, after reading chapter two of Paul and Elder Critical Thinking, I realized I was not even close to being a practicing thinker. Paul and Elder list these stages: Stage One: The Unreflective Thinker (we are unaware of significant problems in our thinking) Stage Two: The Challenged Thinker (we become aware of problems in our thinking) Stage Three: The Beginning Thinker (we try to improve but without regular practice) Stage Four: The Practicing Thinker (we recognize the necessity of regular practice) Stage Five: The Advanced Thinker (we advance in accordance with our practice) Stage Six: The Master Thinker (skilled and insightful thinking become second nature to us) Difficult as it was to admit, I was compelled to place my critical thinking ability at stage one: The unreflective thinker. Prior to reading this chapter, I was not aware of any significant problems in my thinking. I did not realize that I was continually making assumptions, forming concepts, drawing inferences, and thinking within points of view. My judgment of people as bad or good, based on my moral upbringing, further confirmed me as the unreflective thinker. Also, never having seriously questioned my thinking or its implications. Having made the decision to grow and develop as a thinker, my goals now include, making better decision through critical thinking and creative problem solving, and presenting my ideas clearly and concisely. I also realize that critical thinking is a skill that is learned and requires practice. Having these realizations, I can now move on to the Challenged Thinker stage. Paul and Elder note that â€Å"we have great capacity. But most of it is dormant; most is undeveloped. Improvement in thinking is like improvement in basketball, in ballet, or in playing the saxophone. It is unlikely to take place in the absence of a conscious commitment to learn. As long as we take our thinking for granted, we don’t do the work required for improvement. †

I think that we are really dependent on technology. I think that if technology will be lost we will die of hunger. I think that an average teenager can’t live a single day without the following: television, refrigerator, computer, rice cooker, heater, MP3 player, DVD player, VCD player and camera. I think that we are so dependent on the said gadgets that we forgot to use our own talents to the basic needs without the use of the said gadgets. A. Rebels The Rebels in our generation our influenced by Media. They are envied from what they see. As currently explained form our generation has the freedom that are heroes wanted back then. I think that we are abusing the gift that God gave us. When we use too much freedom. We intend to abuse it in a bad way. When we cannot have freedom we want from our parents we intend to rebel form them. We will do any bad ting that we can think of and do it so that we will get what we can. They will give what they can really give you. Some teenagers rebel because their parents do not love them no more. They’re parents do not care to them anymore. Some do not even know the names of their child. Do when a child needs attention from their parents. The child make himself notice by them. They do bad stuffs to be noticed or to become popular. Some teenagers see their idols as a guide in their lives. What they see their idols doing, they think it is right because they are old enough to think so. If they grow old think about their mischief back then it will be so childish. If they do what the artist does their friends will think that they are so cool and so brave to do so. If they do it they will be like their own idols. They should not follow it they should accept themselves. B. Aspiring Leaders If you think that are generation if filled with rebellion and hatred for their country. You think wrong. There is still hope for our generation. They are the ones who are called the children of the future. They are the future Politicians of our country that will save it from misery. The persons who can save our nation are the aspiring leaders. These are the ones who are studying in their houses. They always follow the instructions of their parents. In our generation they are the people called â€Å"play it safe â€Å"ones because from its meaning they do the things in a good way. They follow their parents and they do not do crimes or other bad stuffs. Even though that they have freedom, they do not really abuse it because they know their limitations. They do not go beyond their limitations. They also do not take risks because they might get in a big trouble . These kind of people do the right thing. In the end God will provide them on what he/she deserves. They will be rewarded with such power. The rebels will envy them for having it. They will envy them when they grow up. I think that these kinds of people truly accept who they are and put themselves in a position where it is safe. They do not care if they will be uncool to the popular. They do not even care if they fit in so they will be outcast or not. They are the ones who will serve our country when in need of danger. II. Influences. There are so many influences in our generation. I think that the biggest influence that they can give is your friends. It really depends upon your friends on what you do or do not like. Especially in types of music and clothes. Your friends tell you what suites you the best. You will just get unlucky when you get the bad ones. If you think that they are your true friends. In truth they are just using you to become more popular. A. MTV MTV is a channel that has influenced so many generations for so many years. They have so many kinds of music. This is the channel that can not be beaten by others. It has many loyal fans to protect it from being destroyed. They are always innovating their logo for the past year. I think that every month they always change their infomercials. I think tat is also a factor why viewers want to watch it especially the teenagers. This is also one of their traits from being one the top. This is also the channel where teens get to watch their idols for free. I mean they pay their cable and stuffs; this is the cheapest way to get to look at their idols. They get to see new music videos by their idol. It does not show just a specific music genre. It caters all genres because it says music in its name. There are also many benefits from watching this so Sponsors are flowing out. The good thing about this channel is that it seen all over the world. It does not just cater Americans but also Filipinos. People form different cultures are seeing the other cultures of Pop artist. Sometimes they get easily influenced from them. Different cultures als see it daily. Sometimes it becomes as their daily chance of survival . they get to see their idols for free. A. On August 11, 2014, my idol Robin Williams gave his life away to a depression disorder at the age of 63. No words can describe the tragedy of losing this legendary actor of generations. This beautiful man that has been in the hearts of everyone from Disney-raised children, to their grandparents and on, putting laughs and tears of joy in the homes of every family across the globe. Mr. Williams is the soul of this paper which Ive written as both a personal rendition of his memory, and a jollity tribute to his influential life. I believe the world needs to reconnect to the dramatic influence that Robin Williams has had on the general population thereof. Regardless of being the son of Robert Fitzgerald Williams and Laura McLaurim; the senior executive at Ford for a father, and an ambitious model for a mother, Robin was often tormented in school by bullies for being overweight. To overcome his obesity problems, he joined the wrestling and track team, and began to use his humorous personality to make other children laugh as a way to gain their respect. Separating KRIs from other measures has an intense force on reporting, resulting in a partition of performance measures into those impacting governance and those impacting management. An organization must have a governance report (preferably in a dashboard system), containing of up to 10 procedures giving high-level KRIs. 1.3 Performance and Result Indicators The 80 or so performance measures that lie between the KRIs and the KPIs are the performance and result indicators (PIs and RIs). The performance indicators, while important, are not key to the business. The PIs help teams to align themselves with their organizations strategy. PIs are non-financial and complement the KPIs; they are shown with KPIs on the scorecard for each organization, team, division and department. Performance indicators that trigger KRIs could include: An increase in the percentage of sales with top 10% of customers, Customer complaints from key customers, Late deliveries to key customers. The RIs abridge action, and all economic performance measures are RIs (e.g., daily or weekly sales analysis is a very useful summary, but it is the outcome of the hard work of many teams). We must look at the performance that created sales (outcome) to understand completely what to increase or decrease. Outcome indicators that cause KRIs could include: Net profit on key product lines, Sales made yesterday, Complaints from key customers. 1.4 Key Performance Indicators KPIs stand for a set of method focusing on those aspects of organizational performance that are the most important for the current and future achievement of the organization. KPIs are rarely new to the organization. 1.4.1 Seven Characteristics of KPIs Mr. David Parmenter KPI workshops has done extensive analysis and discussions with over 3,000 participants, which has covered nearly every organization types in the private and public sectors, he has been able to identify the seven characteristics of KPIs. KPIs: Are nonfinancial measures (e.g., not expressed in dollars, yen, pounds, euros, etc.), Are measured regularly (e.g., 24/7, daily, or weekly), Are acted on by the CEO and senior management team (e.g., CEO calls relevant staff to enquire what is going on), visibly specify what action is necessary by staff (e.g., staff can be aware of the measures and know what to put right), Are measures that fix task down to a team (e.g., CEO can call a team leader who can take the required act), Have an important impact (e.g., affect one or more of the critical success factors [CSFs] and more than one BSC perspective), They promote appropriate action (e.g., have been experienced to certify they have a positive impact on performance, whereas poorly thought-through measures can lead to dysfunctional behaviour). Once a dollar sign is put on a measure, it has already converted into a result indicator (e.g., daily sales are an outcome of activities that have taken place to create the sales). The KPI lies deeper down. KPIs should be monitored 24/7, daily, or perhaps weekly for some. KPIs must be supervised 24/7, daily, or possibly weekly for some. A KPI is deep enough in the organization that it can be attached to a team. In other words, the CEO can call someone and ask why. Return on capital employed has never been a KPI, as it cannot be attached to a manager-it is an outcome of many activities under diverse managers. 1.5 Difference between KRIs and KPIs Frequently their is one question that comes forward time and time again: What is the difference between KRIs and KPIs, and RIs and PIs? A cars speedometer provides a useful analogy to show the difference between a result indicator and a performance indicator. The speed the car is travelling is a result indicator, since the cars speed is a combination of what gear the car is in and how many revolutions per minute the engine is doing. Performance indicators might be how efficiently the car is being driven (e.g., a gauge showing how many miles per gallon), or how hot the engine is running (e.g., a temperature gauge). Kaplan and Norton came up with four perspectives: Financial, Customer, Internal Process, and Learning and Growth. But two more perspectives need to be added. Employee Satisfaction is far too important to be relegated to a subsection within internal process. Informed directors know that happy staffs make happy customers who make happy shareholders. The measure employee satisfaction must be more sophisticated than a customer satisfaction survey every blue moon. The Environment and Community perspective has been managed brilliantly by some leading CEOs. Measurement in this area looks at increasing public awareness about being an employee of first choice, staff learning new skills through doing voluntary work in the community, reducing costs through minimizing waste, creating positive press, and increasing higher staff morale by implementing green initiatives. Leading CEOs intuitively work in this area. They realize that the community is the source of your current and future employees and customers. Kaplan and Nortons later work on strategic mapping(4) also alludes to the importance of employee sati sfaction and the environment/community perspectives. This modification is important because it means the BSC now incorporates all triple- bottom-line issues. 1.7 Definition Performance measure:- The term performance measure refers to an indicator used by management to measure, report, and improve performance. Performance measures are classed as key result indicators, result indicators, performance indicators, or key performance indicators. Critical success factors (CSFs):- CSFs are the list of issues or aspects of organizational performance that determine ongoing health, vitality, and wellbeing. Normally there are between five and eight CSFs in any organization. Success factors:- A list of 30 or so issues or aspects of organizational performance that management knows are important in order to perform well in any given sector/ industry. Some of these success factors are much more important; these are known as critical success factors. Balanced scorecard:- A term first introduced by Kaplan and Norton describing how you need to measure performance in a more holistic way. Perceptions in Matthew Arnold's Dover Beach Matthew Arnold’s â€Å"Dover beach† describe the way in which perceptions are mislead society. The use of metaphors, symbolisms, allusiveness, technical quantities, and imagery assist the speaker’s thought regards between what is seen and what is real. Dover beach was written during Victorian era. Which brought civilization based on industry, value and money. This is the time which people start questioning the existence of God. The speaker observed the plight of Victorian era. And he sought an answer to the problems which he and world faced with. In â€Å"Dover Beach†, Arnold uses an exquisitely calm ocean filled with tension to present a position of appearance verses reality. â€Å"Dover Beach† is about a beautifully calm sea, although when looking underneath the surface, it is a world full of hidden turbu... ...man did not, as the churches claimed, have a privileged place if earthly creation, as the image of God, but was merely part of an age-old biological process of the survival of the fittest. Rather than being a little lower than the angels, man was somewhat more developed than the ape. The theory was devastating and destroyed the Christian vocations of many. Perhaps the best way for the modern reader to gain some sense of the impact of this experience is to go to the poetry that grew out of the loss of religious belief Arnold’s plead is also his solution to a world of confusion and chaos. he believes, or optimistically wishes he could believe, that he can take refuge in an internal peace between him and his lover. By saying this, Arnold must believe there is no hope for civilization, and no solution to its problems. On a darkened plain the people cannot truly see what is going on, which draws back to Arnold’s idea that people of the Victorian Age acted without reflection. The darkness is caused by a chaotic world where truth is blind to those who look on it, and the people who look upon the world do not reflect on what they see. Jhumpa Lahiri’s the Namesake Speech

Claude Levi-Strauss once said ‘being human signifies, for each of us, belonging to a class, a society, a country, a continent and a civilization. ’ Belonging is a human desire of being accepted with people or places. In Jhumpa Lahiri’s story, The Namesake, the story follows the Ganguli family from their traditional Indian life in Calcutta through their uneasy transformation into America. This family is strewn with opposing fidelities and the underlying concept of the difficulties of cultural belonging, for being tradition bound immigrants. The common use of the food motif and repetitive contrasts between the cultures of India and America throughout The Namesake create cultural jarring, which demonstrate cultural transitions. The novel opens with Ashima, a newly arrived Indian immigrant in America, making an Indian snack as best she can using American-branded ingredients. Ashima focalizes, â€Å"as usual there’s something missing†, reinforcing the challenge of her own transition to adopting a new culture alternatives. Whilst the iconical American brands of â€Å"Rice Krispies and Planter’s Peanuts† are familiar to western readers, for Ashima it emphasizes her difference, establishing a cultural jarring within her experience of immigration. Another instance where the food motif is evident is at Gogol’s ‘Rice Ceremony’. The traditional Bengali ritual, lays a pen, a handful of earth and some money in front of the baby to determine their future career. The objects are layed in front of Gogol and he turns away. An ‘uncle’ then proclaims that, â€Å"most children will grab at one of them†¦but Gogol touches nothing’. The inability of the baby Gogol to choose anything forshadows uncertainty plaguing him throughout his life. This contrast between Gogol and ‘most children’ makes him become different, which emphasis Gogol’s struggle to belong in both American and Indian civilization. In order to belong to a society, effort must be made to immerse yourself into the patterns and behaviors of the people surrounding yourself. Gogol acts as a mediator between American and Bengali customs, for his parents. This further places him in the middle of the two society’s, not fitting in solely in either. A key means through which Ashima connects with foreign American people is by taking Gogol with her as she goes about her daily life. As she runs about her errands, â€Å"strangers, all Americans, suddenly take notice of her, congratulating her for what she’s done. † The frequent pauses in this line, show Ashima’s sudden shock of her newly found link to America. For Ashima, Gogol is the only way she can connect to the American society, yet it is significant to notice that Gogol resists this mediating role. By rejecting his Bengali origins in preference for an Americanised identity, Gogol projects an internalized racism against his family’s cultural roots. Although he is exposed to both Bengali and American society he makes the conscious effort to be immersed in solely the American culture, thus segregating himself from his heritage which causes him to feel inadequate. Gogol is invited to many Bengali gatherings to encourage him to adopt both cultures but, â€Å"he has no ABCD friends at college. He avoids them, for they remind him too much of the way his parents choose to live†, that is showing a dual-identity. This omnisciently narrated line suggests he makes no effort to associate himself into the Bengali society, which will in the end limit his enrichment in either society. Becoming culturally connected ensures a stronger sense of individual belonging. In The Namesake Maxine attempts to become involved in the Ganguli’s traditional culture, her outlook on relationships becomes too different for Gogol’s parent’s as they, â€Å"avert their eyes when Maxine accidentally leans over to run her hand through his hair. † This act of American relationship publicity, stuns Ashoke and Ashima, as it is forbidden in Bengali culture to display affection in this manner. This restrains Maxine from connecting to Gogol and his family, because she is unaware of multiple customs, which would segregate her from being accepted into their culture. Gogol decides that to belong into the American culture he should change his name, thus changing his identity. He came across the idea of a name change when reading an article which said, â€Å"it was a right belonging to every American citizen† to rename themselves if they feel it doesn’t coincide with their life. Though Gogol changed his name to Nikhil, this statement becomes slightly ironic as he never feels â€Å"all American†. To belong to a culture, adapting or changing oneself to fit into the desired position cannot come from a want; it should be a natural transition. Everyone has a desire to belong anywhere that they may be. However by avoiding or choosing too much against what is natural, then they will often struggle to belong. Fitting into a culture, society or civilization depends on a person’s character and how they choose to interact with the people surrounding them. For Gogol to belong in any of these classes acceptance of himself including his own Bengali background should be part of his journey.

Any type of bullying like | |physical bulling, emotion al bulling, specific bullying, cyber bullying, and verbal bullying I will keep a written and dated record of any comments made with regard of bullying. I will talk to all children involved | |and if necessary parents too. If appropriate and necessary, police will be called. The bullying behaviour or threats of bullying must be investigated and the bulling stopped quickly. | | | |The reasons why they are in place: | |Bullying hurts – no one deserves to be a victim of bullying. Everybody has the right to be treated with respect.
